Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a worldwide health problem, particularly for pregnant women. This review assesses the effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women and their infants. A systematic search was performed of studies published on PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase from January 2020 to January 2021, without restriction by language. This review included 27 studies (22 from China, one from the United States, one from Honduras, one from Italy, one from Iran, and one from Spain), which cumulatively evaluated 386 pregnant women with clinically confirmed COVID-19 and their 334 newborns. Of the 386 pregnant women, 356 had already delivered their infants, four had medical abortions at the time of research, 28 were still pregnant, and two died from COVID-19 before they were able to give birth. Cesarean sections were performed on 71% of pregnant women with COVID-19 to give birth. Fever and cough were common symptoms among women. Premature rupture of membranes, distress, and preterm birth were pregnancy complications. Low birth weight and a short gestational age were common outcomes for newborns. The common laboratory findings among pregnant women were lymphopenia, leukocytosis, and elevated levels of C-reactive protein. Chest computed tomography revealed abnormal viral lung changes in 73.3% of women. Eleven infants tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. There was no evidence of vertical transmission. Most infants were observed to have lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia. The clinical features of pregnant women were found to be similar to those of generally infected patients. There is evidence of adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes caused by COVID-19.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assesses the preparedness of primary care centers (PHCs) in Aseer region, KSA, for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This survey was conducted during April 2020 in PHCs. The questionnaire was developed by the investigators and sent via e-mail to health care providers of primary health care centers (PHCCs). The questionnaire consisted of five parts to assesses readiness of PHCs, knowledge, attitude, and practice of health care providers (HCPs) concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Data entry and analysis were managed by SPSS version 20. Results: Three hundred and seventy-one HCPs participated in this study. Most of them were males (58%), doctors or nurses (81%). Almost all PHCCs have adequate infection control resources, with some shortage in sterilization rooms. Most of participants received on-job training (85%) and had good knowledge about COVID-19. Attitudes of participants showed variation toward COVID-19; 74% were afraid to be infected, 54% were afraid to care for infected patients, 58% were ready for vaccination, and 80% thought that COVID-19 has a huge negative impact on the health care system. Compliance with preventive measures ranged from 66% for keeping social distance to 90% for using personal protective equipment. Most of the participants had positive contributions regarding health education of individuals and communities using different methods including the new social media (80%). Conclusion: This study revealed that PHCCs in Aseer region were well equipped and HCPs were well prepared to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. There are some shortage in a few items of infection control at PHCCs and gaps in knowledge and practice among HCPs which need continuous assessment and monitoring to overcome such barriers.

With the complex presence of important natural reserves, energy is considered as the main key ingredient to facilitate economic development in the Middle East, GCC, and Maghreb regions. Expectations for a rapidly growing economy in the next decade will likely cause an increase in the fraction of energy consumed domestically, limiting what is available for export. Considered as the home of global oil and gas reserves, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is the cornerstone of the global energy architecture, and the global low-carbon energy transition poses critical questions to MENA oil and gas producers. Unfortunately, as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sweeps across the world, growth in the MENA region was projected to fall to 2.8% in 2020, lower than the growth rates during the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2015 oil price shock. Before the coronavirus (COVID-2019), the sharp drop in oil and gas prices that began in 2015 fostered MENA hydrocarbon producers to launch ambitious economic reform programs in all regions. The main goal of these programs was not only to increase the diversification of investment sectors to boost national and regional economies but also to encourage the development of the nonhydrocarbon sector. This article argues for a new challenge investigation and analysis to figure out with current MENA policy options and future prospects, as well as the present impact of COVID-19, in addition to the public policies that encourage diversification economy sector to avoid entire dependence on oil and gas in export are dressed. It also deals with the investigation of the pressing need to create job opportunities for a large and youthful population and the new definition of the possibility of the world moving more aggressively towards low-carbon integration. Background and Objectives: Empathy is an important attribute of a healthy doctor-patient relationship. Although multiple studies have assessed empathy in different countries, little is known about its levels among Saudi residents and its association with perceived stress. Objectives: To assess the levels of empathy and to identify if there is an association with stress in general and across the demographic and training characteristics of residents. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was carried out from December 2020 to March 2021 among residents training at a tertiary academic center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Empathy and perceived stress were measured using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results: A total of 229 residents participated. The mean JSE score was 105.25 ± 15.35. The mean JSE scores were significantly higher among residents training in pediatrics (mean difference (MD) = 17.35, p < 0.001), family medicine (MD = 12.24, p = 0.007), and medical specialties (MD = 11.11, p = 0.012) when compared with surgical specialties and anesthesia. In addition, residents who worked 1-4 on-calls per month had a higher mean JSE score (MD = 11.23, p = 0.028) compared with those who worked 7 or more on-calls. Lastly, no correlation between empathy and perceived stress was detected in the whole sample (r = -0.007, p = 0.913); however, there was a correlation among residents training in medical specialties (r = -0.245, p = 0.025). Conclusion: Residents in our study had empathy levels comparable with Asian but lower than Western residents. We recommend qualitative studies that explore potential factors that might affect empathy among residents and studying the association between empathy and perceived stress among medical residents. Postgraduate curricula should incorporate interventions that foster a more empathetic doctor-patient relationship.

Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is an ongoing global pandemic that is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The severity and mortality rates of COVID-19 are affected by several factors, such as respiratory diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. Bacterial coinfections are another factor that could contribute to the severity of COVID-19. Limited studies have investigated morbidity and mortality due to microbial coinfections in COVID-19 patients. Here, we retrospectively studied the effects of bacterial coinfections on intensive care unit (ICU)-admitted patients with COVID-19 in Asir province, Saudi Arabia. We analyzed electronic medical records of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 at Asir Central Hospital. A total of 34 patients were included, and the clinical data of 16 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 only and 18 patients coinfected with SARS-CoV-2 and bacterial infections were analyzed in our study. Our data showed that the length of stay at the hospital for patients infected with both SARS-CoV-2 and bacterial infection was 35.2 days, compared to 16.2 days for patients infected with only SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.0001). In addition, higher mortality rates were associated with patients in the coinfection group compared to the SARS-CoV-2-only infected group (50% vs. 18.7%, respectively). The study also showed that gram-negative bacteria are the most commonly isolated bacteria in COVID-19 patients. To conclude, this study found that individuals with COVID-19 who presented with bacterial infections are at higher risk for a longer stay at the hospital and potentially death. Further studies with a larger population are warranted to better understand the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 with bacterial infections.

Despite the importance of electronic health records data, less attention has been given to data quality. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of COVID-19 patients' records and their readiness for secondary use. We conducted a retrospective chart review study of all COVID-19 inpatients in an academic healthcare hospital for the year 2020, which were identified using ICD-10 codes and case definition guidelines. COVID-19 signs and symptoms were higher in unstructured clinical notes than in structured coded data. COVID-19 cases were categorized as 218 (66.46%) "confirmed cases", 10 (3.05%) "probable cases", 9 (2.74%) "suspected cases", and 91 (27.74%) "no sufficient evidence". The identification of "probable cases" and "suspected cases" was more challenging than "confirmed cases" where laboratory confirmation was sufficient. The accuracy of the COVID-19 case identification was higher in laboratory tests than in ICD-10 codes. When validating using laboratory results, we found that ICD-10 codes were inaccurately assigned to 238 (72.56%) patients' records. "No sufficient evidence" records might indicate inaccurate and incomplete EHR data. Data quality evaluation should be incorporated to ensure patient safety and data readiness for secondary use research and predictive analytics. We encourage educational and training efforts to motivate healthcare providers regarding the importance of accurate documentation at the point-of-care.

Coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is an infectious disease that led to a global pandemic. In this article, we reported a case of a young women who is known to have idiopathic intracranial hypertension, with iatrogenic skull base injury from a nasopharyngeal swab. Her case was complicated by meningitis.
